Worskhops seek feedback

Government spotlight on rest areas

Have your say

THE Queensland Government is quizzing the state's travellers on their experiences of roadside rest areas.

The online survey comes as the government engaged PSA Consulting (Australia) to prepare a Best Practice Guide to help local authorities and community groups design and manage the facilities.

The guide is expected to cover the optimum location of rest areas, their design and construction, appropriate use, management, maintenance and monitoring and enforcement issues.

An action item from the Queensland Drive Tourism Strategy 2013-2015, the project has been developed to encourage more travellers to take driving holidays in Queensland.

The role of roadside rest areas in fatigue management was raised as a key issue during the strategy's consultation process.

Three consultation workshops have been organised to help prepare the guide.

Each will present options and seek feedback from key stakeholders including consumers, operators, councils, government agencies and industry bodies.

They will be held at:

* Townsville – February 4 from 1pm to 4pm.
* Toowoomba – February 5 from 11am to 2pm.
* Brisbane – February 6 from 10am to 1pm.

Meanwhile, Queenslanders are being invited to complete an online survey on roadside rest areas. It can be accessed by clicking here.
