QUALITY caravan manufacturer Regent has ceased trading, throwing dozens of staff out of work and putting people with caravans on order at risk of losing their deposits.

The well-respected Victorian company, founded in the early 1990s, closed its factory at Campbellfield on April 3.

Visitors to the modern complex in Somerton Park Drive were confronted with locked gates and telephones were not being answered. Most of the stock has been removed.

The company's website is still operational, boasting: "Demand for our products is such that we now have dealers in nearly all states of Australia."

The original owner of Regent died about three years ago, the business passing to his two sons.

People with orders for new Regent caravans were being contacted by their dealers and efforts were being made to find work for the company's 50 members of staff.

One dealer told Caravanning News: "Regent attracted a lot of loyalty and there will be many sad owners."

Regent produced four successful styles of caravans ... the Brentwood, Roystan, Cruiser SE and X-treme.
