Travellers stranded as parks inundated

Teen dies as ferocious weather batters Victoria

A TEENAGER was killed and caravan parks evacuated as wild weather battered Victoria.

The 19-year-old Niddrie man was asleep when a branch crashed onto his tent during a camping trip with three friends at the Sheoak camping ground near Lorne.

He received severe head injuries and was rushed to hospital but doctors were unable save him. His friends escaped unhurt.

More than 1000 State Emergency Service volunteers received nearly a thousand calls for help as flash flooding, falling trees and power lines created havoc across the state.

The Great Ocean Rd was blocked by a landslide at Wongarra, between Kennett River and Apollo Bay. Travellers were stranded by rapidly-rising water at caravan parks near the Cumberland River at Lorne, on Apollo Bay's Barham River and at Wildwood Retreat near Dean's Marsh.

A family's camper trailer worth more than $10,000 was torn apart by fierce winds in Port Fairy.

The Melbourne couple and their two young children had been staying at the 139-site Port Fairy Gardens Caravan Park but left to escape strengthening winds. Police said they had travelled less than 5km when a gust lifted its cover, tearing the frame apart and hurling debris across a wide area.

Meanwhile, the three-and-a-half-star Thompson River Caravan Park at Sale was evacuated as floodwaters rose and swamped many nearby farms.
