State grant allows work to proceed
Major power upgrade for park on
iconic Great Ocean Road
THE largest caravan and camping ground along Victoria's iconic Great
Ocean Road is to have a major power upgrade thanks to a $750,000 state
government grant.
A contract for the first stage of the work at the three-and-a-half star
Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park, which offers more than 600 annual,
seasonal and powered sites, has been awarded to Salt Electrical of
Geelong.
Great Ocean Road Coast Committee chief executive officer David Clarke said
he was looking forward to an "on-time, on-budget and high quality outcome"
for the upgrade.
Power supplies to about 300 sites at the bottom end of the park closest to
the beach will be improved through the installation of a brand new power
system.
There will also be upgrades to four of the nine amenity blocks and
existing cabins.
Work is scheduled to begin this month and should be be completed by
November.
Campers in the southern section of the caravan park will be unable to
access or use their sites until the end of October as power will be
disconnected.
The second stage to upgrade power to the rest of the park will be
completed in 2012 or 2013, depending on funding availability.
"The power upgrade will deliver important benefits to the many thousands
of campers who visit the Torquay Foreshore Caravan Park each year via
improved power supply, reliability and safety, as well as meeting a
Powercor requirement to ultimately reduce the five current points of power
supply in the park to one," Mr Clarke said.
