Havoc at Queensland park

Chemical reaction turns tap water into chocolate sludge

CARAVANNERS couldn't believe their eyes when they turned on taps at a Queensland caravan park.

Instead of the usual crystal clear supply, it was more like brown sludge.

Problems arose at the three-star Bowen Village Caravan and Tourist Park after a chemical reaction between chlorine and manganese from the Proserpine Dam, also known as the Peter Faust Dam.

Boss of the 164-site park Russell Cook said the chocolate coloured water had wreaked havoc for guests.

People at the park on the Bruce Highway were unable to drink the water, wash themselves or do their laundry.

"It contaminated everything, ruined clothing and everything washed in it," Mr Cook said. "One person did a load of washing and it ruined all their clothes."

Other residents in the area also complained about the "chocolate syrup".

Bowen Mayor Mike Brunker was most apologetic. "Usually we'll get dirty water in a couple of parts of town, but this particular time we've got it everywhere," he said.

The Mayor explained that the problem peaked at different times of the year and it was hoped to get government funding for a water treatment plant.
