New rules planned for rego labels
Annual stick-up will soon to
be
thing of the past for cara WEST Australian caravanners will no longer have to display their registration stickers under new rules to be introduced next year. State Premier Colin Barnett and Minister for Transport Simon O'Brien announced that West Australians will no longer need the stickers and discs on their cars, trailers and motorcycles from January 1, 2010. "The initiative will apply to caravans or trailers with a gross vehicle mass of less than 4.5 tonnes," Department for Planning and Infrastructure spokesman Kevin Tonkin told Caravanning News. But owners would still be required to display stickers for the remainder of this year. Mr Tonkins said the new rule would not apply to mobile homes, caravans and trailers over 4.5 tonnes because they were designated as "heavy vehicles". Mr Barnett said stickers and discs were unnecessary because police had new communications technology which meant registration details could be checked using the new police metropolitan radio network. "The new system gives police instant access to the state's vehicle registration database via computers located in police vehicles," he explained. "Police also have automatic numberplate recognition cameras, similar to the Multanova cameras, which can record and assess numberplates as vehicles pass by." The Department for Planning and Infrastructure will continue issuing registration renewal notices six weeks before the expiration of licences which, it said, should give owners ample time to renew.
