Crackdown on drunken revels

Park plans no-booze pact at schoolies celebrations

HUNDREDS of youngsters who flock to a West Australian caravan park for schoolie celebrations will have to sign a no-alcohol agreement.

This follows a crackdown on accommodation providers as thousands of school leavers plan festivities to mark the end of their school life later this year.

But Dunsborough Lakes Caravan Park boss Herbert Schaal, who faces a $1000 fine if underage revellers are caught with alcohol in his park, believes the regulations are crazy.

He argues it is too difficult to police everyone in the park.

"Legally, I am not allowed to search people coming into our park," he explained. "There is no protection for me."

Last year about 750 schoolies had booked out his park two months ahead of their celebrations.

Mr Schaal said all school leavers arriving at his park this year would have to sign an agreement not to have booze in their possession. Anyone found with alcohol would be asked to leave.

Police agree the regulations put the onus on accommodation providers but assistance would be provided where necessary, they said.

The park is popular with school leavers and received glowing reports on the web-based National Schoolies Week Forums. Some contributors described it as a great place to stay but stressed it was "pretty strict".
