Nosy researcher not all he's cracked up to be

THE rather nosy 'safety researcher' chatting to workers at Australia's biggest caravan producing factory was not all he was cracked up to be.

In fact, the clipboard-carrying interrogator was not a researcher at all ... he was a member of Jayco's management team doing a spot of undercover work.

And chief executive Neil Coulson's disguise – complete with false moustache, spectacles and wig – completely fooled shopfloor staff at the company's giant Dandenong factory.

Mr Coulson went undercover as part of WorkSafe Victoria's Skeleton Project, an innovative web-series which gave Victorian CEOs an opportunity to better understand safety from the workers' perspective.

He spent a day talking with workers to collect feedback on new safety equipment designed to reduced workplace-related injuries.

Jayco, which produces around 50 percent of Australia's recreational vehicles, employs 850 staff and has produced more than 120,000 RVs since 1975.

It predicts that about another 10,000 will roll out of their factory complex this year.

Mr Coulson joined Jayco as CEO in 2007 after holding the same position with the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
