SHOWGROUND RV CAPACITY DOUBLED

Murray Bridge Showgrounds

Have your say

MURRAY Bridge Showground on the Princes Highway in South Australia has been given the green light to double its overnight capacity for recreational vehicles.

The local council has approved an enlarged overflow area which will be used during major events or holiday periods.

Councillor Fred Toogood told the meeting: "I don’t think we'll send any caravan park owners broke."

The Murray Bridge Agricultural and Horticultural Society had requested the extra space for RVs after reaching its capacity during the Masters Games.

Caravanners and other travellers are allowed up to a week on the showground's $10 powered and $5 unpowered sites.

Figures released by the society revealed that in February, 110 RVs stayed on the showground.

The average stay was two to three days during which their owners spent about $29,000 in Murray Bridge.

March saw 124 RVs staying for the same number of days. They poured about $35,000 into the local economy.

A report to councillors said the showground had been a popular stopover for RVs and had been "well utilised".

"The need for an overflow area has arisen during the peak holiday periods and at times when the local caravan parks are full as a consequence of a major event," it explained.

"The request from the Murray Bridge Agricultural and Horticultural Society has been to provide another area within the showgrounds to cater for additional newcomers when the existing RV area is full."
