Western Caravans ceases trading

Western CaravansWEST Australian family-owned caravan builder Western Caravans has ceased trading. The Canning Vale company, established by Wes Ridden in 2003, pulled down the shutters this week. No one was available at the factory to comment. Ironically, Western Caravans' last Facebook entry dated July 1 announced: "Good progress with production this week." Western Caravans, members of the Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association of Australia, moved into bigger premises in 2006 to meet a rising demand for its caravans. Leading Perth dealer George Day Caravans was a major selling agent for Western Caravans until about five months ago when they parted company. Mr Ridden – said to "live and breathe" caravans – launched himself into the industry in 1990 when he opened his WA Recreational Vehicles company which customised a range of vehicles for RV use. News of his company's closure comes hard on the heels of the shock demise of Queensland quality off-road caravan builder Phoenix, which went into voluntary liquidation just weeks ago following a dramatic fall-off in orders. "It was a total 'stuff up' and I'm very sorry that I was involved." Furious caravanners swamped Channel 7 and an online caravanners' forum with protests after he took a swipe at free camping during the popular Saturday afternoon show, claiming it was a threat to the livelihood of caravan parks and their operators.

A TRAVELLER who shot a video while riding inside a caravan as it was being towed along the infamous Gibb River Road in WA has copped a caning from horrified police and road safety experts.

The woman at the centre of the controversy even posted footage of her illegal escapade on the web, boasting: "All I can hear is the cutlery banging around in the drawers."

But astonished road safety experts and police were not impressed.

"This was a most foolhardy and dangerous stunt," one police officer told Caravanning News. "She could well have been seriously injured or killed in the event of an accident."

And the Australian Caravan Club hoped authorities would prosecute to deter any copycat attempts.

Travelling onboard a caravan is illegal and offenders can be slapped with fines of up to $2000 in some states.

Airstream caravans on Steve Irwin Way, Queensland.

Route ? No, it's Aussie Route !

CARAVANNERS on a popular Queensland tourist route could be forgiven for thinking they had strayed onto America's legendary Route 66. For there alongside Steve Irwin Way in the Sunshine Coast hinterland – ironically designated Australia's Route 6 – were two 24ft Airstream caravans glistening in all their glory in the afternoon sunshine. "They really took us by surprise," NSW grey nomad Harry Reid told Caravanning News. "I know they are all the go in the States, but I didn't think I'd see one, let alone two, here in the shadow of the Glasshouse Mountains."

RVMAA speaks out on lethal caravan claims

AUSTRALIA'S peak body for caravan manufacturers has blamed non-members for sullying the industry. The Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association of Australia told Caravanning News: "The area for concern is with non-members who often get their 'vans through the registration process in various states even if their 'vans are non-compliant." The association was commenting on reports alleging that potentially lethal and unroadworthy caravans were being manufactured, sold and driven in South Australia. Meanwhile, a couple in their 70s say they are stranded at a SA caravan park after their brand new $95,000 caravan was deemed unroadworthy and a death trap by a safety inspector.

ATTEMPTS to steal two caravans from a Brisbane dealer turned into a comedy of errors.
Police said a stolen utility was crashed through the front gates of Jayco dealer Brisbane Camperland at Tingalpa and a 23-ft caravan allegedly hooked up to the vehicle. But it became dislodged and rolled across the road before coming to a stop. The man then allegedly returned to the yard, hitched up a 16ft poptop caravan and drove away. Police, alerted by numerous calls from members of the public, attempted to intercept the rig before it crashed into a brick retaining wall in an alleyway. Park laundries: some errant bosses hung out to dry  . . .

FURTHER to Sandra Smith’s excellent letter on this (see letter here) I’d like to add another issue with the use of park laundries. Often, when there are lots of serviced cabins onsite (and, let’s face it, cabins are on the increase in most parks these days), we constantly see the park owners or managers washing/drying the sheets from the cabins, in the park laundry. My wife ended up having a 'robust conversation' with the owner of a NE Victorian lakeside caravan park after he removed our, still damp, clothes from the dryer one wet winter’s day, claiming that it had stopped and been left there, and replacing them with cabin bed-sheets and towels. Now what was interesting in this specific instance is that either he had removed them before the machine had finished or the advertised run-time delivered for the money dispensed was overstated somewhat, as we'd set a timer in our 'van to go off around five minutes before the dryer (90-seconds walk away) was due to finish. Regardless of the circumstances of this specific incident, owners/managers regularly use park laundry facilities that are there for the customers and some don't seem to mind throwing their weight around a little if a guest calls them on this activity.

John Christopher,

'Free' mentality comes under fire

I WOULD be quite happy to pay the actual cost of the water, in the past we have felt guilty taking water for nothing. I think grey nomads, and I include myself in that, need to get away from the attitude that everything should be free. Unless a change in attitude occurs I can see facilities will not be made available to travellers in the future.

Chris.

HAVING seen the Saturn V rocket at the Johnson Space Centre, I have to paraphrase Paul Hogan: "That ain't a rocket ... " (see story here)

Forum ban
no joke

THIS is a joke, right? (see story here). Your excellent – no, invaluable – site is read by me each month, or more often via Facebook. I can only pity the mentality of the admin at the Grey Nomads website for their head-in-the-sand attitude. I would understand their attitude at your "free publicity" if you charged for your website, but to suggest they charge you as they do for commercial advertising beggars belief. I am truly staggered and am shaking my head. All caravanners get annoyed and frustrated at things we hear about local councils, caravan parks, national park bodies etc that make seemingly ludicrous decisions affecting us all. But the Grey Nomads website wins the award for stupidity from me! I can only assume that "Cindy" has acted alone and that no one else at the website knows about this, surely not. I am stunned, I really am.

I DON'T need to be reminded to read your excellent Caravanning News ... I just have your publication saved as a ‘Favorite’ ... and just like now, I go there on a regular basis and catch up with what you have to offer. I would suggest your ‘concerns’ about being so-called ‘banned’ are a little unfounded ... those that know, and want to know, will always find you easily.

Sandpit to do
what they like

I RECKON it’s their sandpit and they can allow or disallow who they like. But usually there is a "friends" or such area in the forum directory where other welcome organisations can be placed out of mutual respect. Also these things should be agreed on prior to going into print and jumping all over each other’s toes.

Paul Klat.

Go for it

REGARDING last month's story about Pathfinder Parks (see story here), it's always good to have new caravan parks ...and ones that take well behaved dogs. We have never had a problem, but nomads talk. Go for it Pathfinder.

  MORE  LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Not impressed after Phoenix demise

WE are among the people that have been affected by the demise of the Phoenix caravan company (see story here). Sadly for us this company took our money knowing full well it was in trouble. We also did our research into the build of caravans out there and ended up going with Phoenix because of the build quality of the 'vans. We only signed the contract on 20/4/2011. It would have been known by that stage that things were not good. We went once a fortnight to check on the progress of our 'van, even to the point we were up there on one week before they shut down. We were even talking to Greg on the Thursday before they shut the gates. We have since found out they were trying to get our 'van to the stage where they could put it on a truck to be taken over to Sunland’s yard when we were on the phone to him. He did not have the manners to say then that there was a problem and that our 'van was going to be finished elsewhere or that we were going to have to come up with another $35,000 to $40,000 to finish off the 'van we had paid in full for. We did the right thing the whole way through with both Greg and Fay, but they have done totally the wrong thing by us. They have not even had the manners to contact us themselves to apologise for the state they left our 'van in or the fact they took our money knowing full well the company was in trouble. We had only made our last payment on July 12,  2011, and I had rung him on the 11th to check how much extra the grey water tank was going to cost. He charged us for that as well, an extra $650 on top of the $112,000.00 we had paid. We are grateful to Roy from Sunland Caravans for the fact that he has got our 'van out and that he is willing to finish it to the spec we had for the 'van in the first place. Also he was the one that had to make that fateful 'phone call to let us know what had happened. So do you think people should be saying what lovely people they were? We don't.

Greg and Lenore Smith.

'Van deposit narrowly saved

I WAS at their showroom only a fortnight before this happened and very nearly ordered one. Lucky I didn't as my deposit would have been lost now.

Brian.

Things not looking good

MOST park owners have been actively anticipating this for years (see cabins story here). That is one of the reasons we see less and less powered 'van sites as the space is given over to cabins. Not their fault ... they have to survive as businesses. But it doesn't look good for the currently booming caravan industry. Personally, I will be towing my 'van around for as long as I can afford to. Towing is half the fun.

John Christopher.

Upset after dealer closes

VERY disappointed with Michael Fox from Twilight Caravans (see story here). Told us our 'van would be ready by the end of June, but it hasn't even been started. Shame Mr Fox. Explain this to my family. On the upside, Supreme Caravans will be coming to the party.

Tony Raschella.

Caring for
the future

I AM a pensioner, I tow a caravan. I am 100 percent in favour of carbon tax. It isn't about ME ... it is about the world we leave our grandkids. It isn't about what they are doing in China or Europe ... it is about someone somewhere – US – making a start to do the right thing ecologically for the future generations. This grey nomad is very much in favor of policies made with a view to the future and not my own selfish interests right now.

Buyers
beware

RECENTLY in NSW there have been caravans advertised at prices that are a quarter to a third of those for similar 'vans, with a request for up-front payments. I have been unable to find any government department that can take any action to investigate as "a crime has not been committed" unless someone hands over the money and does not receive the goods. But by then it is too late as the funds are already overseas. It is the same old story ... if something seems too good to be true, it most probably is. Remember the old saying: Buyer Beware.

Colin Rooke.
