Maintenance essential: RVMAA

New safety checklist makes for a trouble-free journey

'It will reward you with the best performance'

Have your say

TYRES, brakes and lights are among the top items for attention on a new caravan safety checklist from the Recreational Vehicle Manufacturers Association of Australia.

President Richard Raven said a pre-holiday safety check should be part of regular maintenance for any caravan or camper trailer.

"They can give years of reliable service, but only if properly maintained," he stressed.

"Our checklist has three sections covering the definitions of important ratings, an easy-to-follow list of the main safety checks and a page to record the relevant details.

"Some servicing requires a trained professional, but there are simple checks that most owners can do themselves," he said.

Key safety items on the RVMAA checklist include:

Tyres: Ensure they are the size specified on the tyre placard part of the vehicle’s VIN plate – your dealer or tyre retailer can explain the markings. Be aware that tyres deteriorate with age. Even a tyre with plenty of tread should be replaced if it has cracking in the sidewall or tread.

Tyre pressures: Ensure correct pressures are used for both light and full loads. If in doubt, ask a tyre expert for advice. The correct pressure will optimise ride and handling, and maximise tyre life. While you're at it, ensure all wheel nuts are tightened.

Brake systems: Ensure these operate correctly on all wheels, including parking brakes and electric brake components on the caravan and tow vehicle. Invest in expert help for a full check.

Lights and reflectors: Check all lights including direction indicators and brake lights, and all reflectors. Always carry spare globes and fuses so you can replace them where necessary.

Chassis components: Especially for caravans used off-road. Check for damage to the chassis, axles and suspension, plus water and gas lines. Get your wheel bearings checked too, or check them yourself if you have the mechanical skills.

Mr Raven said that following the RVMAA checklist would help people to enjoy the maximum safety and performance from their caravan or trailer.

"Especially when recommissioning after a winter lay-up, these simple checks are vital," he said.

"The cost involved is not great, and it will repay you with the best performance and safety.

"Attend to these simple checks and then ensure your caravan is loaded properly ... and you're off to a great start in enjoying the recreational delights that only a caravan or trailer can give."
