Roebuck Bay Caravan Park: submissions

Roebuck Bay Caravan Park: submissions

Council receives 103 submissions

Keep park 'a low-cost' holiday destination

Have your say

COMMUNITY members have pleaded with the Shire of Broome in WA to retain Roebuck Caravan Park as a low-cost holiday destination.

The call was the general theme among 103 submissions received by the council on redeveloping the park.

A report to councillors said the current lease would expire in December, 2017, and the council needed "to be mindful" of expending funds which would be redundant if significant redevelopment occurred.

"That being said, there are still two tourist seasons the current lessee has to operate within prior to the expiry of the lease.

"Furthermore, even with a new lease commencing in January, 2018, until a tender is accepted council cannot be sure on any staging of  redevelopment and associated timings."

Majority of respondents would like to see the
park upgraded

The report revealed that the majority of respondents would like to see the park upgraded.

"However, many wanted to make sure that the park remained as a low-cost holiday park accommodation for tourists," the report said.

The majority of respondents indicated that a pool was not essential.

The priority for items to be upgraded included ablutions, roads, camper's kitchen and manager's accommodation and office.

Councillors voted to release $250,000 from the 2015-16 budget to help finance resealing and repairs to roads, remedial works and improvements to partitioning an ablution block and investigating options for long-term sewer changes.

A workshop with councillors will be held to finalise the scope, evaluation criteria, selection process and governance of the new operator to lease and redevelop the caravan park.

It will incorporate the community's feedback.
