News of a new park was a 'breath of fresh air' Red tape strangles plans for Sunshine Coast park Story and photo by DENNIS AMOR RED tape has forced a company to dilute plans for a luxury 800-site caravan park at a proposed multi-million dollar water theme park in Queensland. Caloundra Shire Council frowned on the planned caravan park, arguing the area fell just outside the State Government's urban footprint which puts limitations on commercial accommodation.
Now the developers have drastically modified the proposal and will include a mere 20 caravan pitches. "It's very disappointing news," caravanner Andrew Devine told Caravanning News. "With the closure of so many caravan parks along Queensland's eastern seaboard, news of a new caravan park was a breath of fresh air," he said. "The Sunshine Coast has seen several caravan parks close during the last few years and accommodation is now at a premium during holiday periods. Travellers often have to be turned away." The amended caravan park will form part of a proposed $100 million 'stay and play' tourism and entertainment complex sandwiched between Westaway and Sattler roads. The ambitious plan was the brainchild of local businessmen James Stewart and Troy Morrow. "It's a massive project and is certainly going to be one of the most exciting tourism developments undertaken in the region for a long time," Mr Stewart said when the plan was first announced. The 66-hectare precinct, to be called Adventura, will be built off Caloundra Road, opposite Corbould Park Racecourse. Plans include a water park, restaurants and cafes, recreation and sporting facilities, pet motel and a conference and function centre. Mr Stewart said the aim was to capture the original spirit and character of the Australian beach holiday while 'proactively and creatively' addressing the needs of the contemporary traveller.
