Cheers and applause as ... Rally pours $200,000 into peanut capital's economy SHOP tills were jingling merrily when hundreds of caravans hit Queensland's peanut capital, Kingaroy.
The occasion was the Combined Caravan Clubs of Queensland's 32nd annual rally, which celebrated the first time members of all 28 affiliated clubs had attended the event. And during the five-day gathering in the country town, about 200km north west of Brisbane, members poured an estimated $200,000 into the local economy. Local business people and residents showed their appreciation by cheering and applauding as the caravanners marched with banners and flags through the town centre. Delegates raised $4000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a monster raffle, drawn in a record 16 minutes, offered 68 items, including two caravan washing machines, a Navman and flat screen television. About half the caravanners stayed on after the official closing ceremony to visit surrounding attractions.
Highlights of the rally included a tour of Bethany, home of the late Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, with the former Queensland premier's son, John, acting as official guide. Caravanners were welcomed to the famous homestead by Lady Flo who invited them to sample her famous pumpkin scones (baked these days by her daughter-in-law). Most people on the tour took the opportunity to view Sir Joh's last resting place.
CCCQ vice president Jim Hogan announced that the 2008 State Rally will be
held at the Rockhampton Showground from September 24 to October 1. BACK TO CARAVANNING NEWS MAIN PAGE
