Sites under bulldozer threat

Green light for first stage of $50m redevelopment

NEARLY 150 caravan and camping sites at Broome's Palm Grove Holiday Park in WA could be bulldozed in a planned $50 million redevelopment project.

The first stage of transforming the site - about 200m from Cable Beach - into a luxury resort and apartments has been given the green light and is expected to be completed within two years.

Broome Resort Developments bought the Palm Grove Holiday Park site in 2008 after a development application was granted the previous year.

Caravan and camping sites will be replaced by 80 short-stay and 42 permanent residential apartments.

Included in the first stage will be a restaurant, two bars, reception area, two retail tenancies, function room, day spa, gym and a second pool.

Reports say existing tourist cabins and chalets will stay but will disappear if stage three goes ahead.

The resort will target the luxury tourism market.

Opened in 1996, the four-star Palm Grove Holiday Park had established itself as one of the leading caravan resorts in the Kimberley region's pearling and tourist town.

It offers a range of park cabins together with powered and unpowered caravan and camping sites.
