NT travellers warned of new smoke alarm law

Have your say

CARAVANNERS in or heading to the Northern Territory have been warned they must have photoelectric smoke alarms in their RVs.

Fire and Rescue Service district officer Grant Hamon told Caravanning News that caravans and motorhomes needed to be fitted with the new devices from November 1.

"Owners should note the recent changes to Northern Territory legislation in relation to the requirement for installation of photoelectric smoke alarms in all movable dwellings including caravans, motorhomes, transportables, demountables and wilderness/safari style tents," he said.

People with working smoke alarms do not have to change to photoelectric ones until their current one stops working or the caravan or movable dwelling is hired out.

Grant said approved smoke alarms were available from all major retail outlets and hardware stores.

"People travelling to the NT in their RVs should check our web site for vital information," he added.
