Wheel clamps at the ready as people turn to illegal camping Reservations plummet as soaring fuel costs hit hard CARAVAN parks in Western Australia are reporting a drop in bookings as fuel prices continue to skyrocket to record levels. Some parks say reservations have plummeted 60 percent as caravanners feel the pinch of ever increasing fuel prices, particularly diesel which in some places is 30c dearer than petrol. Remote fuel stations in the State's north are charging around $2 a litre for diesel. Meanwhile, more and more travellers are trying to save money by overnighting at roadside and beaches areas, forcing one council to hire a ranger to specifically target illegal campers. Ningaloo Lighthouse Caravan Park manager Darren Tate thought caravanners were delaying their travels, resulting in a 60 percent fall in last month's bookings. Meanwhile, Ningaloo Caravan and Holiday Resort manager Muddy Martin is reported to have said that free campers using sites and public facilities without paying had become a serious problem. The report claimed his park had bought wheel clamps. BACK TO CARAVANNING NEWS MAIN PAGE
