THE hunt for brazen thieves who have ruined the retirement dreams of a Victorian couple has been taken into cyberspace.

The crooks made off with Scott and Maria Smith's Bluestone caravan just two weeks before they were due to head off on an east-coast and central-Australia adventure.

Now the family has set up a special Facebook page in the hope it will lead to the caravan being recovered and the thieves brought to justice.

The couple's pride and joy had been left on chocks outside their home in the northern Melbourne suburb of Coburg and could have been damaged as it driven straight off them.

"We are shattered," the 57-year-old caravanners said.

They had only recently completed a nine-month trek along Australia's south and west coasts in the two-year-old custom-made white and burgundy caravan, Victorian registration number S53-475.

Neighbours have reported seeing two men suspiciously driving around nearby streets in a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a Nissan Navara, American Dodge or F150.

The missing caravan was fitted with a panel next to the rear window to prevent the handlebar of a bicycle running on the aluminium cladding. Other items fitted to the caravan were a retractable water hose and a Navy Stokers spare wheel cover.
