Wendy amazed at people's ignorance of Australia

Grandmother encourages travellers to play the game

By Dennis Amor

GRANDMOTHER Wendy Mullett is helping caravanners play the game as they wend their way round Australia.

The "chairman of the board" from Benalla in Victoria recently accomplished a 20-year ambition with the release of the Aussie Trek Boardgame, a game she devised after many years of caravanning.

"I am a retired person who loves this great country of ours deeply," she told Caravanning News. "But I am amazed at people's ignorance of the basic knowledge about the place. I hope my game will encourage them to learn more about our homeland."

Players imagine they are on a caravanning holiday, following National Highway One around the nation.

It takes them through towns and tourist attractions both on and off the major highway.

During their trip, players win or lose 'fuel credits' and the person accumulating the most after one circuit of the board wins.

Ironically, they lose fuel credits for speeding while towing their caravan ... a hot topic which featured in the last edition of Caravanning News.

Mrs Mullett, who has two children and six grandchildren, said players also earned fuel credits by helping injured wildlife, but lost them by picking wildflowers.

She began developing the boardgame after teaching her children by correspondence school in the early 1980s when her family lived in the Northern Territory.

"I was disillusioned about how little Australian history and geography was taught in schools at that time," she explained.

Mrs Mullett hopes her game can be used in schools.

Up to eight people can play the game, which costs $58. For more information, email Mrs Mullett at wmullett@bigpond.net.au
