Showground ban 'could lead to more illegal camping'

BANNING caravanners and other travellers from NSW's Mudgee Showground could lead to an increase in illegal camping, it is claimed.

Caravanners are up in arms over Mid-Western Regional Council's decision to allow camping there only when all tourist parks in the town are full.

Showground fees have also soared above those of the local caravan parks to further discourage travellers.

One grey nomad said it was another "slap in the face" for budget-conscious travellers who relied on showgrounds to keep costs down.

"It will just lead to more people breaking the rules and camping where they shouldn't," he claimed.

Mid-Western Regional Council general manager Warwick Bennet told Caravanning News: "A number of the commercial operators in this region are concerned with council running a camping ground activity in competition with them."

The council was reviewing the legalities of continuing to allow camping at the showground.

"We certainly will require a development application to continue with it," he added.
