THE caravan industry was a "great example" of how Victorian manufacturing could continue to thrive and generate employment, according to State Industry Minister Lily D'Ambrosio.

Officially opening the recent Victorian Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow, the Minister pointed out that 85 percent of Australia's recreational vehicle products were manufactured in the state, where 70 percent of the nation's RV manufacturers were based.

"The industry is worth $1.4 billion annually and, importantly, it employs 5000 Victorians," she said.

"At a time when manufacturing in Australia is facing some serious challenges, the caravan industry in Victoria is showing us that there are still great opportunities to grow and create new jobs.

"Despite the challenges, this government believes there is a strong future for manufacturing in Victoria and we will be working hard to foster an innovative, forward-looking Victorian manufacturing sector."

Ms D'Ambrosio said Australia's fleet of caravans and motorhomes had increased by nearly 30 percent since 2008 and now stood at about 530,000.

The RVs were driven partly by retirees travelling around the country but also by more families opting to take to the road.

"Australians have had a long love affair with the caravan and this summer hundreds of thousands of people have been out exploring the countryside, meeting other travellers and spending time with their families in caravans and motorhomes across the nation," she said.

"A caravan gives you the freedom to travel to your own schedule, stopping as long as you like, moving on when you are ready and always having the convenience of your own home away from home."

Ms D'Ambrosio thought the Victorian Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow provided a great opportunity to showcase the "excellent products" manufactured in Victoria and to promote outdoor lifestyles.

She said the government looked forward to working with the Caravan Association of Victoria to ensure the most was made of the "fantastic opportunities for more investment and jobs in this industry".
