THE body of a 27-year-old man who was stabbed to death at a Victorian caravan park has been returned to India, according to reports out of New Delhi.

Lakhwinder Singh, from Rajpura city in the Punjab, was working as a tomato picker and died at the Miner’s Pick Caravan Park, Rushworth.

Ambulance Victoria said he was dead when paramedics arrived at the caravan park in the state's north-east.

Sources in India said authorities had contacted Lakhwinder's wife and were assisting with funeral and other arrangements.

The caravan park was full of Easter visitors, many who had arrived in town for the annual Easter parade and fair.

A spokeswoman at the park described Lakhwinder as "the loveliest guy you would ever meet". She said he had stayed there on and off for about four years.

Police said they were called to the park at about 1.30am and established a crime scene.

They later arrested a 37-year-old man and charged him with murder.
