Fragile coastline under threat

CARAVANNERS have been warned they will face fines if they camp illegally on conservation reserves along WA's midwest coast this Easter.

The Department of Environment and Conservation's George Watson said the coastline between Lancelin and Dongara was becoming increasingly popular as a camping destination.

But, he said, many travellers were seeking isolated locations and camping illegally in fragile coastal environments.

"The opening of Indian Ocean Drive last year has improved access to much of the midwest coast for holidaymakers and the sheer number of visitors to coastal communities in this region is increasing the pressure on the coastal environment," he explained.

"The recreational opportunities provided by the Jurien Bay Marine Park and the turquoise waters of this magnificent stretch of coast attract significant numbers of visitors, and we ask that people enjoy and respect the area by not camping illegally."

Mr Watson appealed for visitors to adhere to the numerous signs in the region, or risk receiving infringement notices and being moved on.

"It is unfortunate, but this coastal environment just cannot sustain the level of illegal camping occurring at the moment," he said.

"Until new infrastructure can be built for camping and caravanning, campers are asked to use the camp sites and shire facilities provided in towns along the coast."
