THE owners of a Queensland caravan park and their children will embark on a three-month charity fundraising odyssey next month.

Cameron and Julie McKay plus their four kids ‒ Darcy, Tiarna, Maddison and Hamish ‒ will leave their August Moon Caravan Park in Innisfail to travel south to Melbourne.

During their adventure, with caravan in tow, they will be raising funds and awareness for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The McKay clan beat thousands of hopefuls from all across Australia to be chosen as Dometic Follow the Sun Ambassadors.

Their already impressive 2008 Jayco Sterling will undergo a $25,000 Dometic makeover before the 13-week expenses paid trip down Australia's east coast.

"When my wife initially put in our entry I said: 'Go for it, it's not like we're going to win', so I guess she really showed me," Mr McKay said.

"Dometic and Follow the Sun have given us a great opportunity to enjoy what our beautiful country has on offer, all while putting in effort for an important cause."

He said his family had many great fundraising ideas up its sleeves.

The McKays will begin their journey in Cairns at the beginning of next month, making stops in Central Queensland, Gold Coast, Shepparton and more before completing their journey in Melbourne on October 31.

Dometic Australia’s head of marketing Justine Schuller welcomed the family as 2016 Dometic Ambassadors.

"The McKays are a fabulous family who have been enjoying caravanning and camping holidays for years, and we are delighted to have them on board," she said.

"We are looking forward to following their travels online and seeing the impact they make through raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research."

During their travels, the McKays will hold Follow the Sun "Happy Hours" at predetermined stops along the way.

Other winners were 47-year-old Kate Richards from Cairns who will travel in the National Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Minnie caravan with her family of four, and travel writers Grant Hanan (55) and Linda Bloffwitch (48) who will travel down the east coast in their 2009 Traveller Sensation caravan.
