Free accommodation for boffins

Committee approves honesty camping system for reserve

MID Murray Council's Mannum Caravan Park committee has approved a camping permit system for the Bolto Reserve in South Australia.

It will operate under a "casually monitored" honesty system similar to that adopted by Parks SA, a committee report says.

Nightly fees will be $10 and there will be a five consecutive day limit.

Meanwhile, the committee has endorsed a request for free cabin accommodation at the council-owned Mannum Caravan Park for 10 university boffins who will be working on the historic paddle steamer, PS Marion.

The 113-year-old vessel is the last steam driven, wood fired, overnight passenger-carrying side paddle steamer in the world and will be in Berri dry dock from September 20 to October 1 when the archaeologists from Flinders University will be working on her.

"In consultation with the park managers, the council’s deputy chief executive officer has authorised for the cabins to be made available to the Mannum Dock Museum for the archaeologists at no cost," a committee report says.
