Bridge creates problems
The lowdown on GPS hazard for
ferry-bound travellers
SATELLITE navigation systems are creating problems for some caravanners
heading for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry in Melbourne.
Travellers with full height caravans or fifth wheelers who blindly rely on
their GPS to direct them to the ferry terminal are finding their way
blocked by a low bridge in Montague Street.
Only pop-tops are able to squeeze under the bridge, where some drivers
have already ended up ripping off the roof of their vehicles.
Authorities have now installed sensors which activate flashing red lights
but larger vehicles continue to run into problems.
Caravan and motorhome organisations advise drivers leaving the Westgate
Freeway to take the Montague Street exit and ensure they turn right at the
Normansby Road intersection instead of continuing along Normansby Road.
