Tills jingle as caravanners hit showground Caravan rally helps lift town's drought gloom CARAVANNERS helped lift some of the gloom from a NSW town after one of the worst droughts in living memory. More than a thousand travellers converged on the historic town of Forbes for the 13th National Caravan Clubs Rally. In fact, the 506 caravans set up at the showground helped swell the local population by about 10 percent during the 10-day event. Organising Committee president Des Hartree reportedly said the rally went smoothly, with just the occasional hiccup. "It was a success and 98 percent of things went right," he added. The event was estimated to have poured $2 million into the local economy with many local businesses enjoying a post-Christmas boom. Some reported near record trading in what would typically be one of their quietest periods. A giant marquee, 32 shower blocks, 36 toilet blocks and a wheelchair access toilet and shower block were erected in the showground for the comfort of the caravanners. The next rally will be held in Elmore, Victoria, in 2010 and already around 300 caravan club members have signed up to attend. BACK TO CARAVANNING NEWS MAIN PAGE
