World champion sportsman robbed

Thief legs it after brazen crime at riverside park

POLICE are hunting a brazen thief who swiftly legged it after robbing a world champion sportsman at a Queensland caravan park.

Former Paralympian Brendan Burkett who was robbed of his artificial legThe heartless bandit escaped with former Paralympian Brendan Burkett's $6000 artificial leg from the 135-site Noosa River Caravan Park at Munna Point.

Associate Professor Burkett (pictured left), a sport lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast, had his leg amputated after an horrific hit and run accident in 1985.

His waterproof artificial leg was stolen from a boat while he was holidaying at the riverside park with his family.

The former sportsman expects to have a replacement fibreglass leg by July.

He retired from Paralympic swimming at the 2000 Sydney Olympics after becoming a Paralympian world champion, world record holder, Commonwealth Games and Australian multiple medallist.
