SOMERSET Regional Council in southern Queensland has axed fees for recreational vehicles overnighting at Kilcoy's Anzac Park.

Travellers in motorhomes,  caravans and other RVs can now stay for free for 72 hours.

The news has been welcomed by the local Chamber of Commerce and Community, whose president Cheryl Gaedtke said it would assist the town's economy.

"I am happy that the camping fees are no longer applicable to Anzac Park," she told Caravanning News

"Come and enjoy Kilcoy, and find out why it was named the friendliest town.

"On behalf of the chamber’s membership, I would like to sincerely thank council for its progressive and supportive action," she said.

"This is wonderful news and will complement the RV-friendly town status recently achieved for Kilcoy."

Mrs Gaedtke encouraged all local businesses to take advantage by welcoming the extra travellers who would be attracted to Anzac Park.

"As president of the chamber, I would like to advertise all our local businesses and update the list currently on display at the park," she said.

The decision to allow free camping would also support the new tourism initiative launched recently by council, she added.

Newly published tourism brochure Somerset, Real Country, Real Adventure, Really Close to Brisbane is available at the Kilcoy Craft Market and Kilcoy Council Office.

It contains details of seven free rest areas in the Somerset region.

In addition to Anzac Park, there is free camping at Seib Street, Kilcoy  (20 hours), and paid camping at the Kilcoy Showground on the D'Aguilar Highway ($16 a  night, maximum seven days.  There are private caravan parks located within 10 to 20 minutes' drive from the town.
