'We take safety of guests very seriously'

Park security upgrade after police probe child kidnap bid

SECURITY is being stepped up at a West Australian caravan park where a man allegedly attempted to kidnap a young girl.

Police are still investigating after the six-year-old Perth holidaymaker said she was grabbed by a man and bundled into his blue sedan at the entrance to the BIG4 Beachlands Holiday Park in Busselton.

Gavin Farrell, who has owned the park with his wife Lou for 17 years, said the attempted abduction happened near the boom gate ... the only area of the 82-site park not protected by high fencing or surveillance cameras.

“We are now installing another camera in this spot, and investing $10,000 on an upgrade of our security camera system throughout the park," he told local media.

“We take the safety of our guests very seriously, employing a security guard during peak seasons, running surveillance cameras in various areas across the park and having security fencing around the park's perimeter."

He said it was the first incident of its kind at the family park, and he was confident it would be the last.

But the negative publicity had resulted in cancelled bookings for Beachlands and other parks in the area, Mr Farrell added.

The offender is described as aged between 30 and 45, slim with black hair and blue eyes, hairy arms and yellow teeth. He wore blue jeans, black jacket and a dark coloured beanie. His car had skull-style car seat covers.

The alleged abduction attempt followed a similar incident at the Top Tourist four-star Dongara Tourist Park, about 350km north of Perth, in which a nine-year-old girl from Perth was grabbed as she slept in her tent at 6am by a man and bundled into his nearby ute.

The screaming youngster managed to escape as he went to the driver's side.

Police Sgt Graham Clifford told Caravanning News the incident could be linked to another where a man pulled back the bedclothes of a 43-year-old woman as she slept at 3am in a tent at the four-star BIG4 Dongara Denison Beach caravan park about 2km away.

The wanted man is described as caucasian, about 30 years old, slim and driving a white 4x4 dual cab utility with a noisy exhaust and skinny tyres.

Anyone with information on any of the three incidents is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
