Inquiry focuses on importance
of
grey nomads to outback
THE Queensland Government is turning the spotlight on the important
role grey nomads play in the state's economy.
And its Parliamentary Economic Development Committee hopes its latest
initiative will attract comments from senior caravanners and motorhomers
who regularly visit the
outback.
It has launched an inquiry into how the Sunshine State's rural and
regional communities can be developed through grey nomad tourism.
The move comes as thousands of caravanners turn their backs on the winter
chills of the southern states and head north to Queensland in search of
blue skies and sunshine.
Chairman Evan Moorhead said his committee would consider the role of grey
nomads, who he described as an important section of Queensland's tourism
market.
"These travellers tend to visit in off-peak periods and in rural and
regional areas not always frequented by other tourists," he explained.
The inquiry would involve issues relating to grey nomad infrastructure
requirements, the commercial camping and caravan park industry and ways to
market Queensland to "this valued group of tourists".
Mr Moorhead said the committee was interested to hear community and
industry views.
"This committee is seeking information on how we can make Queensland a
more attractive and comfortable place for grey nomads to come, travel and
relax.
"Grey nomad tourism provides a great potential for job creation,
particularly in areas 'off the beaten track'."
Submissions to the committee on matters such as health services, waste
disposal sites, signage and major issues relating to the regulation of
Queensland’s camping and caravan parks can be made online before May 28 by
