Accused killer fights extradition proceedings

Man admitted burning 'van with body inside, court told

A MAN accused of murdering his girlfriend in Victoria more than 10 years ago is fighting extradition proceedings in the UK.

A London court heard that 53-year-old Stephen Hutton had allegedly confessed to killing 34-year-old mother of one Sandra White before placing her body in a caravan and setting it ablaze in Yandoit near Daylesford.

Westminster Magistrates' Court was told Mr Hutton related the story to medical staff after he was involved in a 1990 road accident. He claimed he had seen a vision of Jesus in light through a crack in his windscreen.

He also believed he had smothered a woman while she slept next to him before carrying her body to a caravan which he then set on fire.

The court heard that Australian police were informed but shelved the case after Mr Hutton refused to speak to them, but the case was reopened when Ms White's son asked for a cold-case inquiry in 2005 and new evidence was found.

During the extradition hearing, counsel Rachel Spearing argued it was "unjust and oppressive" and against Mr Hutton's human rights to pursue the case, claiming people's recollections would be poor.

Acting District Judge Quentin Purdy is expected to hand down his decision later this month.
