AN elderly caravanner was killed and other four travellers injured in separate accidents as the Easter holiday break got off to a disastrous start.

The woman who died had climbed out of her Ford Fairlane's front seat before she was struck by her caravan as it moved off, police said.

The late afternoon tragedy happened as the New South Wales couple was on an access road to the Banyule Park State Forest at Echuca in Victoria's north.

An ambulance spokesman said the 78-year-old caravanner died at the scene.

A man in his 70s was later helping police with their inquiries.

A COUPLE was trapped when two 4WDs towing caravans collided near Myrtleford in north-east Victoria.

One 4WD ended up on top of the other in the spectacular smash on the Great Alpine Road near Bowmans Forest.

The boy's 43-year-old father and his mother, both from Mrytleford, were cut from their badly damaged 4WD by members of the State Emergency Service.

The father was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

His five-year-old son managed to scramble unhurt from the wreckage.

A Shepparton couple in the second 4WD was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

Police later urged all drivers to take care.

POLICE launched a hunt for a damaged car which sped off after leaving trail of damage at a Queensland caravan park.

Holidaymakers were roused from their slumbers as the sedan ploughed into the pool fence at the 4.5-star, 128-site Happy Wanderer Caravan Park in Hervey Bay shortly after 5am.

Police said the driver of the maroon or brown vehicle could have been "hooning" outside the park before losing control.
