THREE generations of a gypsy family were jailed for hacking a man to
death during a wild brawl at a NSW caravan park.
The victim, 34-year-old William Smith, was a member of a rival gypsy
clan and was attacked with hand axes, machetes and a samurai sword, the
NSW Supreme Court was told.
He suffered 18 stabbing, slashing and chopping injuries to his head and
body and died of a pierced lung after being set upon by members of the
Jones family at the Tuggerah Village Caravan Park at Kangy Angy, on the
NSW Central Coast, in October, 2005.
Five members of the Jones family were jailed for between seven-and-a-half
and nine years for manslaughter, and a sixth family member was released on
a good-behaviour bond for being an accessory after wiping clean two
weapons used in the attack.
The court heard that at least 11 members of the Smith family were involved
in the showdown after an earlier drunken argument about Mr Smith's
daughter marrying a Scotsman - an insult in Romany gypsy culture.
