Council trio rewarded for environmental sustainability Gumnut Awards for Ballina's green caravan parks
Pictured are, from left, John Dineen of Dineen Tourism Management with Ms McKay and Scott Taylor, Ballina Shire Council holiday parks coordinator who accepted the awards on behalf of the successful Ballina parks WHEN it comes to saving the planet, three caravan parks in the same town are all doing their bit. And their sterling efforts were recognised recently when the Ballina trio was presented with Gumnut Awards at the annual Caravan and Camping Industry Association of NSW Awards of Excellence. All three are owned by the local council and leased to managers. The Gumnut scheme is based on the successful David Bellamy Conservation Awards in the UK and was developed by the Australian Caravan and Camping Association in association with the University of Western Sydney. The town's Shaws Bay Holiday Park, Flat Rock Tent Park and the Ballina Central Holiday Park all scooped silver Gumnut awards in the parks category, while the Ballina Campervan and Leisure Centre collected a bronze in the trade category. Tourism Minister Jodi McKay presented the awards to parks and trade businesses which had demonstrated outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability.
