TRAVELLERS renting motorhomes in Australia will soon be driving into a
new age of environmentally friendly touring.
New Zealand-based Tourism Holdings Limited is pouring $50 million into
creating a new generation of low emission, fuel efficient Maui, Britz and
Backpacker tourers.
The investment will include buying 370 diesel powered automatic Sprinter
vans from Mercedes-Benz.
THL’s specialist motorhome and caravan designer CI Munro will build a new
range of super luxury two berth and traditional four and six berth
motorhomes on the chassis for use in Australia and NZ.
"At THL we believe it is essential to commit to quality and sustainability
for the future of our industry, and the our industry sector in
particular," chief executive officer Trevor Hall told Caravanning News.
"Customers have told us they are looking for both elements in their
purchase decisions. This is why we have elected to partner with
Mercedes-Benz for our new motorhome production as they are arguably the
best vehicle manufacturer in the world."
Tourism Holdings Limited is New Zealand's premier tourism company with
extensive operations in Australia and Fiji.
Operations include car and motorhome rentals in Australia and New Zealand,
a specialist caravan and motorhome manufacturing company in Hamilton and
transport and tourism activities in the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Waitomo
and Milford Sound.
For THL, the huge investment will deliver the dual goals of delivering the
highest quality experience for travellers and environmental sustainability
by taking an active role in reducing carbon emissions at source.
Mr Hall said his company was striving to deliver "amazing travel
experiences with the least carbon footprint."
THL said the aim is to create motorhomes that will be in demand by private
purchasers for their luxury, features and longevity, once they have been
retired from tourist duties.
The first of the new Maui Mercedes-Benz Sprinters have been ordered for
delivery to CI Munro’s factory in Hamilton for the transformation into
motorhomes and should be on the road mid 2008.
