Family flee as caravan, 4WD  erupt in fireball

Driver puts foot in it as rig burns on searing highway

FIVE terrified travellers scrambled from a 4WD towing a caravan when it erupted in flames on a remote highway in the Northern Territory.

The rig caught fire as the 78-year-old driver switched from LPG to petrol on the Stuart Highway about 70km south of Tennant Creek.

The shocked caravanner and his 74-year-old wife, together with a couple in their 30s and their two-year-old toddler, managed to clamber from the burning Mitsubishi Pajero before it was burnt out.

The caravan was also destroyed.

Police said the hapless driver, who had not been wearing shoes, was taken to hospital suffering burns to the soles of his feet ... received when he leapt onto the hot road in the scorching afternoon sun.
