Fears over unfit equipment

Caravanners urged to check their electrical appliances

TRAVELLERS have been urged to double check the safety of their onboard electrical appliances as they hit the road in their caravans.

Queensland Industrial Relations Minister Cameron Dick said a simple check of electrical items could save holiday hiccups and even lives, by helping people to avoid malfunctioning appliances and electric shocks.

"Packing up for a holiday can be stressful as there are so many things to remember, but I encourage travellers to make it a priority to check all electrical appliances, particularly during holiday periods," Mr Dick said.

"Not all electrical equipment is fit for use in caravans, mobile homes or similar vehicles – it is really a case of double-checking with the supplier or manufacturer to make sure it has been tested and approved for use on the road."

Mr Dick said Queensland's Electrical Safety Office had recently examined two battery chargers suspected of causing fires in caravans.

And inspectors had reported another holiday horror story in which a microwave oven spontaneously started and set fire to a towel that had been placed in the unit to protect parts.

"The microwave, which was in a stationary caravan at the time, may have malfunctioned due to prior vibration damage," Mr Dick said.

"Electrical malfunctions can also be caused by extreme temperature fluctuation so it is worthwhile making sure all equipment is up to scratch for the holidays.

"You can find out more about your electrical appliance and its suitability for use in caravans by reading the instructions for that particular model and checking with the supplier or directly with the manufacturer.

"Always switch off appliances when they are not in use and regularly check all electrical appliances in caravans to ensure no covers have fallen off and the units are still operating safely."
