ALICE Springs' Heritage Caravan Park has scooped a $9500 government grant ... to build a "doggy daycare centre" so canine-owning guests can go sightseeing.

Work is well underway on the novel $20-a-day facility which should be open at the Heritage Caravan Park in mid-November.

The park was one of several tourism businesses which successfully applied for funding from the $4.75 million Tourism Infrastructure Development Fund.

"We are one of the most pet-friendly parks around," manager Mark Newman told Caravanning News.

"But with all the national parks around here, there are many places you can't take pets.

Dog wash"Some of our guests do not want to leave them tied up all day so we decided to build this doggy daycare centre to make things easier for them."

Mr Newman said the canine guests were provided with individual accommodation complete with shade and artificial turf.

Since buying the park in 2010, the Newman family has continually strived to make it more accommodating for pets by adding extra facilities.

These have included a dog wash, large off-leash area and upgrading some accommodation with small pet yards.

Mr Newman said the park wanted to cater for the growing number of people travelling with pets and there had already been "fantastic feedback" on the doggy daycare centre concept.

"We will do four or five checks on the animals every day and owners will have their own key so they don't have to rush back at a certain time to collect their pets," he explained.

The canines would be fed at whatever time their owners wanted and this was included in the price.

Though no cats will be allowed in the new centre, it was possible they could be looked after in the park's office, Mr Newman added.
