Man caught angle grinding VIN number

News story leads to a
caravan crook's demise

'Your work has resulted in a great outcome'

Have your say

AN eagle-eyed Caravanning News reader has helped trap a caravan crook in Victoria.

Scott and Maria Smith thought they had seen the last of their Bluestone caravan which was stolen just two weeks before they were due to head off on an east-coast and central-Australia adventure.

The couple's custom-made pride and joy had been left on chocks outside their home in the northern Melbourne suburb of Coburg.

Son Adam said the caravan had now been found after someone noticed it appear next door and saw a man angle grinding the VIN number off the frame.

"They thought this was suspicious, found the article in Caravanning News and contacted my parents," he explained. "They confirmed the caravan was theirs and contacted local police."

Adam said his parents had already bought a new caravan after being paid out by the insurance company.

"But the company gave them first option to buy it, which they did and then sold it to a family friend who was looking for a caravan," he said.

"We would all just like to thank you for your article and willingness to alert the caravanning community about this.

"In the end your work has resulted in a great outcome for my parents."

A man was helping police with their inquiries.
