Melbourne Leisurefest

FLASHBACK: Crowds at last year's Melbourne Leisurefest

'There's virtually nowhere you can't go'

Love affair with RVs continues: industry

Have your say

VICTORIA'S caravanning industry is cock-a-hoop as recreational vehicle sales continue to soar.

"The love affair with our industry just continues," jubilant Caravan Industry Association Victoria chief executive Rob Lucas said.

"And why wouldn't it ... it's a great leisure activity to get out and about, and with the product our industry is producing there's virtually nowhere in Australia you can’t go."

Mr Lucas was speaking as final preparations were being made for the Melbourne Leisurefest, Australia’s biggest RV, camping and 4WD show.

Tens of thousands of holidaymakers and adventurers are set to descend on Sandown Racecourse for the event from October 8 to 11.

Staged by the association and the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, the event will showcase thousands of the latest RV, camping, 4WD and outdoors products and accessories from Australia's leading manufacturers.

The association said there were now more Australians than ever looking to their own backyard to spend their valuable holiday time.

'Best place to inspire a great adventure'

There are now 34 percent more caravans, motorhomes and other RVs on the road than in 2008 and over 30 million nights a year spent in caravan parks and camp grounds.

Mr Lucas said that with so many people choosing Australian holiday destinations, events like the Melbourne Leisurefest were the best place to inspire a great adventure.

Now in its eighth year, it will provide the opportunity to see, touch and experience all aspects of outdoor life.

The 4x4 Village will be back again and visitors can see all the best 4WD parts, accessories and touring vehicles in one place.

AL-KO will be demonstrating its electronic brake actuation system (ESC) on the track. Visitors will be able to ride in the passenger seat to feel how different caravans tow.

For fishermen, the 15-metre long, 3-metre high Yamaha Supertank will offer a 'fish-eye view' as experts demonstrate the different types of lures and how fish respond to them just like they would out on the water.

And from Broome to Byron Bay and everywhere in between, all corners of Australia will be also represented by local tourism officials.

In addition, a new Centre Stage will host product demonstrations, cooking classes, competitions and live music.

An expanded kids' area will have lots of fun and entertainment to ensure the whole family has a great day out, with shuttle buggies ensuring everyone gets around the show with ease.

The show will be open from 10am to 5pm Thursday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

Admission is $16 for adults and $12 concession. Children under 15 will be free when accompanied by an adult.
