EIGHTY-YEAR-OLD caravan park operator Dawn Prendergast is battling on ... despite an onslaught of mindless vandalism.

In the latest blow, tearaways set fire to an empty house at the neatly-kept, 135-site Citygate Caravan Park at Lavington in New South Wales.

Vandals had previously targeted the Wagga Road holiday destination with their spray cans, daubing signs with unsightly graffiti.

But plucky Mrs Prendergast takes it all in her stride and continues running the 21-acre park, despite husband Ron undergoing hospital treatment.

"I suppose I cope because I know that is how things are nowadays," she told local media. "Very often the wrongdoers get away with it, justice doesn't prevail."

Tourists at the 3.5-star caravan park were awakened by the 3am blaze which badly damaged an assistant manager's weatherboard three-bedroomed house, which has been empty for about two years.

It took 16 firefighters about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire.

They believe squatters could have been using the weatherboard building.

Police were investigating.
