CARAVAN thieves seem to be getting more choosy ... opting for the more luxurious and expensive models.

They are targeting caravans in the $100,000-plus league as caravanning throughout Australia becomes more and more popular.

In the latest crime, brazen thieves made off with a Boroma Tourista Breeza 700 ST from a storage yard at Clontarf on the Redcliffe Peninsula, north of Brisbane.

"We had our dream 'van for a total of one week," shocked owner Mark Smith told Caravanning News. "A secure storage and locks on the van, how could anyone get it out?

"I can't describe the feeling when reality finally set in ... disgust, disbelief, non-comprehension and disappointment."

It was the second Boroma to fall victim to thieves within weeks. After a tip-off, police caught a man towing an 18-month-old Boroma Grandinata 745ST days after it had been stolen in Sydney.

It had been stripped of all personal items and the caravan's documentation was neatly arranged on the bed in readiness, it is believed, for an imminent sale.

Mark and partner Jennifer bought their caravan from Gayndah couple Wendy and Trevor Kirk – who had to sell it for family reasons – and were looking forward to a life on the road.

"We have been planning the grey nomad lifestyle for the past four or five years so started researching the best 'van to buy," Mark said. "We have both worked all our lives with not much to show for it really and were thrilled with our Boroma. How could anyone do this to us?"

Mark spent days after the theft scouring the streets, caravan parks and yards on the Redcliffe Peninsula for his caravan, but without success.

"Being a Boroma, is was set up for 12volt, had a generator on the drawbar and even a nifty dog kennel under the 'van. It had a new awning and annex that had never been used, as well as mesh walls. The only thing we needed to do was fit solar.

"After taking delivery we worked on it before and after work all week and started moving gear from our tow vehicle. We went to the storage yard in Clontarf – which was locked plus there was a tow hitch lock on the caravan – only to find it gone. We were devastated."

The stolen Boroma Tourista Breeza 700 ST – registration number 232 QPO – was white in colour, with a stone guard on drawbar and tool box and jerrycan holder on rear.

It had a roof-mounted Electrolux airconditioner and an NEC washing machine, Winegard aerial and all standard Boroma accessories.

The VIN is 6T9T21ABA20CJU060.

Anyone with information is asked to contact their local police.
