THE Northern Grampians Shire council has given the go-ahead for power to be disconnected from caravan sites at Lake Batyo Catyo.

The move comes after the 'caretaker' of the camping ground offered free powered sites to attract travellers to the camping ground between Marnoo and Donald in the Victoria's Wimmera region.

Councillors decided at their meeting on August 23 to approve recommendations made by the lake's committee of management.

These included disconnecting power to the sites; securing external power connection points where possible; closing the kiosk and cottage, and introducing a 'take in, take out' rubbish policy.

The recommendations also said there was "no role for a caretaker" at the camping ground.

A report said the area should be restructured in such a way that it could continue operating with reduced facilities pending a return of water to the lake suitable for recreation purposes.

Mayor Dorothy Patton said the changes were also necessary to meet tough regulations.

"We've just had a problem with caravan park regulations that we're trying to step around as well because they're very stringent these days," she said.

Cr Patton was baffled by the offer of free sites from a man calling himself the camping ground's caretaker.

"Council has not charged a fee for recreational camping at Lake Batyo Catyo for many years and patrons are currently able to camp at the site at no cost," she said.
