Industry highlights key issues with ministers

Have your say

THE Caravanning Industry Association of Australia has held talks with government ministers to highlight key industry issues soon to be decided in cabinet.

Association chief executive Stuart Lamont, chairman Mark Lindsay, treasurer Dennis Austin and lobbying advisor Neil Coulson met with Minister for Small Business Bruce Billson to provide him with a clear briefing on the state of the industry.

It included the industry's importance to small business and growth in Australia, the industry's position on the Motor Vehicle Standards Act review and other compliance issues.

The association said it was eager to present its case to as many senior politicians as possible, creating a groundswell of understanding and support within cabinet.

Particular attention was given to the inconsistent regulatory burden commercial caravan parks faced compared to low-cost or ‘free-camping’ facilities, and of the need for consistent enforcement of local, state and federal regulation.

The Caravanning Industry Association of Australia representatives also met with Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane, Parliamentary Secretary to Minister for the Environment Bob Baldwin and an aide within the Prime Minister's office responsible for advising on industry matters.

The association is gaining unparalleled access to senior federal politicians, with another round of meetings scheduled for early this month.

It said the industry was one of Australia's greatest success stories, achieving not only record RV production and registration growth, but contributing over $15 billion annually to the economy, particularly to regional areas.

"We will continue to share our successes with government as we gain influence in this sphere," a spokesperson said.
