Wrong turn ends in disaster Bridge blunder ends odyssey for Bridges TWO Queensland grey nomads escaped unhurt when they drove their fifth-wheeler under a low bridge in Victoria. Ironically, the couple's surname happened to be ... Bridge! Mervin and his wife Marge were on a round-Australia odyssey after selling their home in Collinsville, west of Bowen, and had travelled nearly 3000km without incident when they unfortunately took a wrong turn in South Melbourne. The roof of their 25ft Wildcat fifth-wheeler was ripped off as Mervin attempted to drive under the 3m-high Montague Street Bridge, scattering belongings all over the roadway and leaving parts of their $200,000 mobile home hanging from the overpass. The hapless couple escaped unhurt but were visibly shaken by their experience. The Queenslanders were on their way to the city's ferry terminal to catch a boat to Tasmania. The shocked couple said they were insured but could not say whether they would continue their dream trip. "Worse things could have happened, I suppose," Mervin said before he and his wife drove from the scene in their undamaged Iveco dual cab, leaving the remains of their wrecked home in the hands of a recovery company. "At least we were not injured so I think we got out pretty lightly," he added.
Police have interviewed the couple over the accident. BACK TO CARAVANNING NEWS MAIN PAGE
