'Huge potential' but ...

Only two takers for
$1 caravan park

A NSW council which offered to lease its caravan park for just a dollar a year has received only two expressions of interest.

Brewarrina Shire Council in the state's west will now consider what to do when it meets on July 22.

The Brewarrina Caravan and Camping Park next to the swimming pool in Church Street has 12 powered caravan sites and eight powered camp sites.

It offers toilets, showers, a BBQ area, powered sites and laundry facilities but has been temporarily closed to tourists while the council decided its future.

A report said: "Although tourists indicate the need for a functioning caravan park in Brewarrina, the cost associated with upgrade to park facilities, particularly security, is a financial commitment that council believes would attract and suit a private operator."

Councillors decided to offer the lease for three years with an option for a further three years at an annual rent of $1.

They agreed that the successful applicant would receive $42,000 for repairs, maintenance and capital improvements.

Council general manager Glenda Tasker said it was important the town had a caravan park, adding: "We get so many travellers come through and if there's no place here then people have to drive a very long way to get through to Bourke."

Brewarrina tourism manager Fran Carter said the council's offer provided huge potential for a private operator "to get into the tourism mix at very little risk or financial commitment".
