Shoppers forced back by caravan inferno

Disaster strikes on first day of couple's round-Oz trip

SHOPPERS dashed to the aid of a couple whose caravan burst into flames on a supermarket carpark.

Disaster struck John and Judith Carpenter on the first day of their planned round-Australia adventure.

They had driven from Kempsey in New South Wales and stopped for some last minute shopping at the Aldi supermarket in Ballina, about 290km north.

Flames were suddenly spotted coming from their rig but shoppers who tried to help could do little as the fire took hold.

The couple's caravan, car and belongings were destroyed in the inferno, fuelled by two venting gas bottles.

Ballina Fire Station's Captain Dennis Henry said the cause of the fire was a mystery because of extensive damage to Mr and Mrs Carpenter's Nissan Pathfinder 4WD.

Mrs Carpenter later paid tribute to people who tried to help during the drama. She and her husband had received four offers of emergency accommodation, she said.
